The good news? We’re perfectly located near some incredible family-friendly winter activities in Lancaster County. Whether you’re looking to explore nature, learn something new, or simply get outside and stretch your legs, there’s no shortage of options (most within 20 minutes of your stay!).

1. Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area
Middle Creek is always our go-to, and you’ll find us recommending it every chance we get. Located just a short drive from Refreshing Mountain, this free outdoor destination is a dream for families who love nature.
Spanning more than 6,000 acres, Middle Creek is home to waterfowl, grassland nesting birds, and wetland-dependent species. With over 20 miles of easy-to-navigate hiking trails, it’s a great option for families with kids of all ages. The visitor center adds an educational element, and the views, especially in winter, are absolutely stunning.

2. Warwick to Ephrata Rail Trail (WERT)
Looking for a simple way to get outside and move? The Warwick to Ephrata Rail Trail (WERT) is an excellent option for winter walks, bike rides, or stroller-friendly outings.
This nearly 8-mile trail system winds through villages, farmland, and wooded areas throughout the Lititz and Ephrata region. It’s popular with walkers, runners, and cyclists. It’s perfect for families who just want to get OUT and explore without committing to a long hike.
Bundle up, bring the bikes, and enjoy a peaceful winter trail close to Refreshing Mountain.
3. Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania
Just 15 minutes from Refreshing Mountain, the Wolf Sanctuary of PA offers a unique and educational winter experience for families with older kids.
This family-owned wildlife refuge is home to over 50 gray wolves and wolf-dogs living on more than 80 acres of protected woodland. Through guided tours, visitors learn about wolf behavior, conservation, and the common myths surrounding these incredible animals.
It’s a meaningful, eye-opening experience that combines education with adventure, and it’s a great addition to your winter itinerary.
4. Downtown Lititz, PA
Only about 15 minutes away, downtown Lititz, PA is a charming stop that’s especially great for families during the winter months. Some highlights include:
- Lititz Springs Park– fountains, playgrounds, pavilions, and scenic paths right in the heart of town
- Tree House Park- an inclusive play space designed for all ages and abilities
- Sturgis Pretzel Factory- tour the original pretzel bakery, learn to twist pretzels, and enjoy a warm, fresh treat
Grab a coffee, let the kids play, and enjoy the walkable downtown atmosphere.
5. Green Dragon Farmers Market
If you’re visiting Lancaster County, the Green Dragon Farmers Market is a must.
Open every Friday from 8am-8pm, this massive indoor and outdoor market features 100+ local vendors selling fresh produce, baked goods, meats, dairy, antiques, and specialty Lancaster gifts. With free parking and endless food options, it’s an easy and fun family outing, even in the winter!
If you haven’t experienced the Green Dragon yet, you’re missing out on a true Lancaster County classic.
